Open Shotgun World Champion Josh Froelich and Open Shotgun Shoot Off World Champion Scott Greene are on this edition of the 3-Gun Show podcast to discuss their recent trip to France for the 2018 Shotgun World Shoot.

We start from the beginning with why they chose to shoot the IPSC match, how each set up and executed a practice regimen and what international travel  with guns was like.  Then we get into the mindset of playing on the world stage, Pro-hacking PractiScore stats and what Scott and Josh's individual titles mean to each of them.

The Nordic Vortex Tri-Gun is a storied match that was started by DPMS and through some political difficulties at their original range turned into a shotgun-only match. That carried on for a number of years and spread the shotgun culture throughout the practical shooters of Minnesota.

The Tri-Gun has been resurrected as a 3-Gun match at its new home of Forest Lake Sportsmen's Club.

Don't expect a lot of hoser targets or easy shots at this match, they put you to the test with pistol and, of course, shotgun. Find out more by listening to this Match Recon.

Tactical Optics - Jake Latola (156)

*Other opportunities 2-3 Shotgun Side Matches

Match Flavor Very MN, shotgun targets were difficult, heavy and far away
Terrain 7 bay stages, 3 that were multiple bays, long range was just in a large bay. 2 natural terrain - jungle runny stages.
Skillz Utilized precision, not much hoser stuff, pistol targets were far, shotgun targets were far, uncomfortable positions, getting crammed inside small areas, shotgun loading, clay targets with rifle.
Farthest Shot and/or # of long range targets 1 375, 3 275, 3 175, then reengage 75 yards forward
Logistics Check in and get your t-shirt, looked pretty straightforward. Main match seemed well organized. RO Match was very disorganized.
Venue Rifle bays out to 400 yards, competition bays with 20 ft berms, 5 stand, sporting clays, trap & skeet, and 3D archery. SAND EVERYWHERE!
Pre-Communication Email came out 2 weeks in advance with rules, round count, self squadding info, squad matrix etc. These were later given to shooters in the form of a match booklet.
Staff One RO was a close rider. One of 3 organizers was a complete loose cannon.
Fun factor/Dave Factor Stages were pretty good other than the Terminator one. Hot Holster, Getting inside small pallets.
Funny things that happen at the match. I whooped Becky's booty on Stage 5, Diamond mine. RO match in the woods was completely different, a good reminder how difficult it is to place well as an RO.

Thanks to Wade Jones for guest hosting this match recon!

This was the most difficult Match Recon that I've done to date. I had high hopes going into the Wyoming Magpul Governor's Match and was very disappointed in both the match and the match administrators, Competition Dynamics.

One of the biggest problems in 3-Gun is that everyone seems afraid to "tell it like it is" when something goes wrong. When a match is terrible or a product is bad people just seem to clam up and say nothing. I've heard stories of repercussions for speaking up- sponsorship can be pulled, you can get blackballed from certain matches or get a reputation as a troublemaker.

I owe it to you guys as listeners of The 3-Gun Show to tell you the truth so you can make good choices on where you spend your hard earned entertainment dollars.

I believe in the vision that the Wyoming Governor's office has for their match and it was a very cool experience to watch Governor Matt Mead speak before the prize table.

Please listen with an open mind and let me know what you think in the comments below.

Changing divisions has been a hot topic lately with the dissolution of the 3-Gun Nation Pro Series we have seen a lot of the folks that traditionally shoot Tac-Ops (the only division recognized in the Pro Series) switching to Limited, Open and even Heavy divisions.

Why the exodus? There are many reasons to swap divisions; trophy hunting, shooting with friends, diversifying a team or even just playing with some new toys. Whatever your reason you can rest assured that the 3-Gun Show will help you through the process including helping you break down the rule set to maximize your advantage, choosing proper equipment and even giving you permission to purchase that brand new blaster.

This and more as we break down that what, why and how of division jumping.

This week is the final installment of Parting Shots from the Vortex Shooter’s Source 3-Gun Championship and we get to hear a couple tales of alarms going off while people are shooting, why you never fall asleep at a match, the hazards of shooting big-bore and what is “pork chopping.”

Plus we get into the VS3G match, what sets Texas matches apart from the rest of the country and the strategy of shooting a match with a mulligan. If you like this type of format or even if you don’t like it, be sure to let me know what you think in the comments and enjoy these tales from the range with Nick Miller, Ryan Reed, Bill Corcoran and Adam Maxwell.

There are always those cool stories from the range that we hear and I thought it would be fun to record a bunch of them to share with the audience. This one was recorded right after I fired my last shot at Vortex Shooter’s Source 3-Gun Championship. Adam Maxwell is going to tell us an incredible tale of exceptional sportsmanship from Scott Greene that took place at the Lucas Oil Shotgun Championship finale.

Mike and Lan of Dissident Arms have two big announcements to share with the 3-Gun Show audience plus how they're planning a big splash on the international competitive shotgun scene.

We also discuss all things shotgun including stage design, specifically how to make a jungle run that flows, their partnership with Briley Manufacturing and coming full circle from buying their supply of shotguns at an online retailer to having their KL-12 sold at that retailer.

After shooting for six years you come up with your first DQ in a major match while you're in the middle of the performance of a lifetime. How do you deal with that impact to your mental game and to your future performance? This exact situation just happened to Dillen Easley and we got together after the Gadsden Shotgun Championship in Missouri to do a post mortem on the event.

We also get into planning a comeback from your first DQ and how to reframe the event to ensure future performance. Along the way we get into technical breakdown of stages, how to train to be ready for the shooting season when the temperature drops, and working your stage plans toward your strengths. Plus, the ever present conversation of mental game.

My guest this week is USPSA Grand Master Charlie Perez and we discuss how to practice mental discipline in daily life to help your match performance, what is dry fire vs dry practice? And how to avoid the wrong type of practice as an adult learner. I also give Charlie the opportunity to share some things about 3-Gun that he’s observed and how we can be better.

Charlie is like a lot of us, he loves to tinker but he is quick to point out that a lot of us can fall into the trap of chasing the widgets. We talk about how to avoid that and focusing on making fun a higher priority than performance. Something we all tend to forget from time to time. On the performance end Charlie has noticed a few things that we 3-Gunners can improve from his observations including how to encourage more speed in your game or why "the turtle promotes more turtle."

Plus! Charlie's idea to market practical shooting to other racers...

This week we have a unique episode and a couple of guests to help me do it. Cody Allenbaugh is a guy that is no stranger to 3-Gun, I met cody on the range when he was RO’ing a match and I’ve come to learn that Cody is a an avid run & gun racer. It just so happens that I am helping put on a Run & Gun at my local range with our 3-Gun Match Director, Mike Griswold. Mike came in the studio with me to do the match recon of Superstition Mystery Mountain 3-Gun which is up on the Patreon feed at patreon.com/3gunshow. We used this opportunity to pick Cody’s brain on how to set up and run our own match.

This podcast is all about running & gunning so we talk gear specific to run & gun, the side benefit of losing weight and getting ripped to shoot these matches. And like I said we get Cody’s expert advice on everything from run distances, number of stages, how to set up target arrays, staggering shooters to prevent backups and of course, how do we score it?

This week Jeremy Moore of Shooter's Source and North Texas Multigun comes back on the podcast to tell us what is up with the upcoming Vortex Shooter's Source 3-Gun Championship. As a regular Match Director Jeremy is used to being in charge so he takes over the podcast part way through and begins to interview me. We discuss things like what I do to occupy my time when driving solo all across the country, how I choose the matches that I shoot, what the 2018 3GS Schedule looks like and many more of the questions that I get asked frequently via PM, DM, email and in person at matches.

Jeremy has worked for himself for decades and after selling a successful landscaping business devoted himself to the shooting sports. We share a lot of similarities in that respect and get into the topics of entrepreneurship, self development and self improvement. I share my philosophy of giving tons of value with no expectation which leads to receiving more than you thought possible and Jeremy schools me on weightlifting for 3-Gun and how to get control of your day.

Plus! The Burpee Challenge....

The Texas 3-Gun Championship is one of my favorite matches of the year and I sit down with the senior match staff to talk about what it takes to put on a Texas-sized 3-Gun match, what their goals are when interacting with shooters and how they were able to move the match to its new home. Plus we get to chat about sponsorship advocacy and how a new position at Texas 3-Gun is providing more value to the companies and individuals that make these matches possible. Match Director Kurt Gruber, Range Master Aaron Hayes and Sponsor Advocate/Social Media Maniac Garrison England give us an awesome behind-the-scenes look at the admin side of a match while it is in full swing.

These guys have a ton of experience and success in Tac Ops and Limited Division respectively and for the 2018 season they will be shooting head to head in Open division. That’s right we have a couple of division jumpers here and we’re making this a podcast series called Breaking Open.

The driving force behind the United Multi Gun Leagues, Pete Rensing, is back on the podcast this week to chat about all things USSL! Pete has been running matches for eight years and along the way he has put together a rule set that was formed out of necessity and a wide-ranging love for Outlaw matches in the world of 3-Gun. Over the years the rules became solidified and the shooters were loving the major matches so much that they would go back to their club matches and rave about them.
Recognizing an opportunity to add some unification to the sport Pete set about creating the United Multigun League which quickly expanded to the United Shooting Sports Leagues, encompassing all disciplines of practical shooting. Listen in to find out what the current situation is with UML, the big-picture goals of the organization and how you can become a member or bring UML to your local range and get in on the fun.

Shooting major 3-Gun matches can be incredibly expensive. Once you throw in travel expenses, lodging, match fees and ammo you could be looking at a weekend that cost you $1500 or more if you're not careful. As a young 3-Gunner Garrison England found himself in that predicament but he was already hooked bad on multigun matches. The question was how do you travel and shoot matches more while keeping costs down? Garrison brainstormed with friends and over the years he has become quite effective at cutting the cost of a match to almost half of his original expense.

Listen in and Garrison will tell you how to shoot more and pay less.

Plus! We also discuss exciting developments out of the 2018 Texas 3-Gun Championship that is coming up in March. There will be more shooting opportunities than ever and there may be a couple spots left up for grabs.

Team Breda and Team HK Shooter Sean Burrows is on the show this week to do one-year check in on the digital marketing space since we last spoke at SHOT Show 2017. In his personal life, Sean is a marketing consultant for mid-size corporations, startups and Venture Capital firms. Sean teaches us the details of crafting your style on Instagram, why having an opinion and preferences is important and how to put the social back in social with good communication outside of your little space.

We wrap up the show with things that are working in the social media space right now and what the plan should be going forward, how to double down on what works for you and where to begin. There is a lot of information packed into this episode that will help you become a more effective and valuable brand ambassador for the companies that believe in you.

In only it's second year the Colorado 3-Gun Championship sold out and presented shooters with a mix of fast, technical stages, an open terrain stage and a creative memory-stage to compensate for bays that are limited to 200 yards. Plus my favorite stage: Hot Lava!

Forest Lathrop stops by the studio to discuss the match and we breakdown how to practice, prepare and perform in next year's match. We also discuss the shooting culture in Colorado and how one person can affect an entire state of shooters.

The Aguila Cup makes it's debut in the United States for 2018 and it brings with it an exciting format that showcases multiple disciplines of competitive shooting in the same weekend. Of course 3-Gun is involved in this event as is rimfire and sporting clays. Mark Passamaneck makes a return to the podcast to tell us about the format of the match, the marketing team behind it, how this is more of an event that the matches that we are used to shooting and why we as 3-Gunners should attend events like this.

I spend a lot of time with my nose, ears and eyeballs deeply entrenched in the world of 3-Gun so being a guest on the AR-15 Podcast was an exciting opportunity to speak to other shooting enthusiasts that have not shot any competition before. I was surprised by a lot of the questions that they asked as they were not things that I had considered barriers or hurdles to shooting matches. It really helped adjust my perception of what type of content is important to newer shooters that may be listening to the 3-Gun Show on a regular basis and how I can help remove those barriers to entry and flatten that learning curve.

JD & Reed were great hosts and Mike Cap even jumped into the fun, bringing his knowledge of competition shooting to the show as well. Along the way we had some laughs, mostly at Reed's expense, and hopefully the boys learned something from all the talking and I'll see them at a match soon.
