Brian Payne has come up in many conversations that I've had with 3-Gunners all across the country. He is a rifle builder at JP Enterprises, father to two amazing shooters in our sport and a heavy influence to many that have come up shooting competition in Minnesota. I was fortunate to meet Brian at the Nordic Vortex Tri-Gun and his kindness lived up to the legend. In this episode we dive into his start in 3-Gun in his 40's, how he practiced and taught his boys to shoot without a huge ammo budget and the importance of mentoring new people in the sport.

Be sure to listen to the beginning and listen to the first retraction I've recorded for the show. I totally got the story about the 2016 Rockcastle 3-Man 3-Gun wrong and I set the record straight.

Highlights of the Podcast:

  • Training 3 Payne's without little resources. Hint: It's dry fire...
  • How to separate the Super Squad to mentor new shooters
  • Why Brian was fearless to shoot major matches right from the start
  • A proud achievement of 3-Gun in Minnesota
  • Plus! The most fulfilling match that Brian has ever shot
  • And More!

Rockcastle Shooting Center is the setting for this Match Recon and I shoot the annual 3-Man 3-Gun that Bryan Ray and Brian Vaught put on as a "thank you" to the shooting community that has given them so much. This match is always so much fun because it has so much team coordination, strategy and shooting going on. Once again I got picked up on a team that needed a third guy and I got to meet some great new people.

In this episode you will learn how to prepare to shoot next year's Rockcastle 3 Man 3 Gun including some hot tips I probably should have kept quiet.

Josh Froelich is a hard training and focused individual and that is the reason he has rapidly excelled in the sport of 3-Gun. Josh learned that discipline in another non-mainstream sport; mixed martial arts. In this podcast Josh tells us how he trained to be a cage fighter and how he uses his experience in focus and mental preparation to shoot at the top of open division.

Highlights of the Podcast:

  • How to decide where to focus your training energy
  • Why Josh is motivated and wired to compete
  • How much dry fire is necessary to reach Josh's level

There are so many great matches all over the country these days that I can't be at all of them to bring you the Match Recon goodness so I've deputized Minnesota Shooter, Hawkeye Ignite Match Director and 3GN Pro Adam Maxwell to help fill in the gaps with matches that he has shot. Adam brings a unique perspective as an experienced shooter and he is using the same criteria that you told us was important to you in a 3-Gun Show survey.

The first in Adam's series is the Seekins Precision High Desert Championship which has taken the place of the MGM Ironman on the 2017 calendar. Adam shot this match on a business trip to Idaho and we sat down to talk about the ins and outs of the match, what you can expect and how to prepare to shoot the match yourself.
