Kentucky 3-Gunner and match director of the Rock Hard Bruce Davidson is on the show to discuss the match and announce a partnership with several other matches to create the Hard as Hell Series and points race. Bruce has extensive experience in running events including the world's largest "toy airplane" event, "The Bruce," that he holds at his farm. Bruce tells us how he uses this experience to engage his shooters for the entire weekend including holding several side matches that raise funds for Mission 22.

Special Field Correspondent Bryan Ray shot a really cool match recently, the Firearms Industry Team Challenge. This match is quite the departure from what we ordinarily cover here on The 3-Gun Show and it is a follow-up to the interview I did with David Power about the Industry Choice Awards back in Episode 130. Many of the shooters, personalities and manufacturers that we know from 3-Gun were involved in this match at the Rockcastle Shooting Center and based on Bryan's Recon it is easy to see why.

This match is designed as a networking and social gathering for industry professionals, but they opened registration for “Pro” teams too.

Terrain Natural Terrain
Skillz Utilized Team work, ability to perform with stage guns, ability to quickly identify where a pick up gun is zeroed and correct.
Farthest Shot and/or # of long range targets 450 yards with a 6.5CM gas gun.  450 yards with a .308 gas gun, approx 250 yards with a 30-06 bolt gun, approx 15 targets from 100 to 200 with other bolt and gas guns

Venue Rock!  All stages accessible even if it had rained.  Golf carts provided for the sporting clays stage, 3D archery targets with steel “kill zones”
Pre-Communication Schedules posted on-line well before the match.  Schedules and reminders communicated via email prior to the match.  Schedules, stage maps, etc posted at the lodge.
Staff Most were experienced Ros from major and local 3 gun matches.  Mark Roth of RCI was one of them.
Fun factor Between team work, pick-up guns and ammo, heckling, and coaching- this match was a blast.  A little heartburn on long range target misses, (never really know how well a rifle is zeroed when you aren't the one that zeroed it) It's a great opportunity for me to shoot some types of competitions I never do- (5 stand, sporting clays)
Funny things that happen at the match. All the typical shenanigans that happen at Rockcastle in the parking lot after a day's shooting.

Special Field Correspondent Adam Maxwell worked hard to get a 3-Gun Nation Regional in his home state of Minnesota and it came to fruition in the 2017 3GN Midwest Regional. Adam points out in this Match Recon that a 3GN match is now it's own flavor of match and tells us why.

We also get a little behind the scenes on the logistics and coordination that it takes to get a 3GN match on your range plus the coolest parts of the 3GN RO class.

This Match Recon was recorded months before several of the key players at 3GN split off into the new venture of Strategic Match Design (SMD) so it is interesting to hear the dynamic presented in Minnesota.

Missouri has a lot of great 3-Gun happening and this Match Recon takes us to the Missouri 3-Gun Championship put on by Tooth and Nail Armory. Adam Maxwell is back as special field correspondent and he tells us everything to expect when you shoot the MO 3 Gun Champs, how to prepare, how to practice and even gives us some pro tips on reviewing the rule book when you shoot a major match.

As usual we hear some good match shenanigans and this time we find out why Adam doesn't like one-gun stages.

On This Podcast You'll Learn:

  • Why True Professionals are professional in every aspect of their life
  • The main responsibilities of a range officer

Advice from Heath Clevenger:

What does the RO want from a Competitor:

  • Be on time to the stage brief
  • Listen to the stage brief
  • Be ready (have all of your gear and guns) shoot when you are on deck, be waiting on the RO. DO NOT make the RO wait on you. This is the equivalent of making the entire match wait on you. 30 seconds of waiting for 200 competitors is 100 minutes of delay. This is the difference in shooting when the sun is up or shooting in the dark.
  • Tell the RO the order in which you plan to shoot long range targets
  • Understand that the time to ask questions is not on the clock!
  • If the stage is complicated or you plan to shoot a stage differently than everyone else, let the RO know your plan before you start.
  • Be nice, be patient with the RO. You are not the center of his universe.
  • Retrieve your equipment after you get done shooting
  • If you disagree with a call, if the RO makes a bad call, talk to the RO politely about your view. If you cannot come to agreement with the RO, ask politely to speak with the Range Master. Stay calm.
  • Remember, you will most likely see that RO again at another match. Do you want to make a friend or a foe?

What do Competitors want from an RO

  • To fully read and explain the stage brief the same way for every squad/ shooter
  • Fair calls with any question going to the favor of the competitor
  • To not be distracting or asking questions off the wall questions when you are getting ready to shoot
  • EQUALITY! – treat me the same a Jerry or Horner
  • Do not talk down to the competitor (Niki says guys treat her like she is stupid if they don’t know her, and thinks this happens to women often)
  • Consistency in everything, from reading he brief to making calls on long range, to paper hits
  • For the RO to remain calm when the competitor disagrees with a call that they made and/ or if they ask for the RM
  • For the RO to be calm and confident
  • To be paying attention to the task at hand, not having a conversation that distracts from competitor that is shooting or ready to shoot.
  • Guaranteed the exact same target presentation

The Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) has taken the shooting sports by storm in the last couple years but questions remain as the sport matures into its adolescent years. Many shooters report being mistreated or overly scrutinized at USPSA pistol matches. With the 2017 Lucas Oil Pistol Caliber Carbine Championship, PCC-only matches are catching on. So what is the future of PCC in 3-Gun? Adam Maxwell and I tackle this question with help from the community on this episode of The 3-Gun Show.

On This Podcast You'll Learn:

  • What would ideal PCC divisions look like?
  • How do we make room for a PCC Division without a ton of concessions and should we?
  • Is the evolution of "2x4" the future of PCC in 3-Gun?
  • Should there be a special Pistol Caliber Carbine division for nostalgic/cool guns?
  • Plus! How do you blow up a PCC?
  • And more!

This podcast is one from The 3-Gun Show archives and one of the most popular episodes ever. The first time I met Jerry Miculek in person and my first time at the NRA Whittington Center in New Mexico, he introduced me to the topic of vision in the shooting sports. What seems like such a basic concept really blew my mind and changed the way I think about the game. I have revisited this topic many times recently both on and off the show and I thought it would be fun to check back in on the topic from the master.

If you've heard this one before, listen again to see if you pick up on anything new now that you have more experience in the sport.

Plus! Listen in after the interview for some behind-the-scenes banter between Adam Maxwell and I that was recorded in between podcasts in the summer of 2017.

The Beast Master, Nick Atkinson, was on the podcast back in June to discuss his new predator hunting project and his plans for stay at the top of 3-Gun. While we were at it we recorded a Q&A session with questions gathered from The 3-Gun Talk group on Facebook. As usual the 3-Gun community has come up with some fun questions and some serious technical questions so if you're in the mood to learn or laugh, you won't be disappointed.

On This Podcast You'll Learn:

  • How to practice rifle shooting if you suck at rifle shooting
  • Why skinning a raccoon is not worth two dollars
  • How to avoid getting hung up on specialty targets

Friend of the show, Josh Tarrant, is back on the podcast this week to discuss performance vs expectation of performance. This is one of the aspects of "the mental game" and definitely among our favorite topics on the podcast because we invest a lot of time, money and effort into 3-Gun and we'd like to see it pay off in a great match performance. Balancing the desire to do well with your actual match performance is something that the top shooters in the sport have locked down or are constantly managing as they make their way through a match. People like Josh are figuring it out along the way and applying their experience from other high-level sports, bringing in new ideas and new perspectives to the game we love to play. Find out how Josh is learning to deal with expectations on this episode of The 3-Gun Show.

On This Podcast You'll Learn:

  • How managing your mental performance determines the outcome of your match
  • Why burning a stage down won't win a major
  • The desire to do well is what drives your training
  • Process based thinking vs outcome based thinking
  • The importance of taking a break in 3-Gun
  • Plus! Josh issues a challenge to you up-and-coming shooters...
  • And more!

When we heard that friends of the show Niki and Aaron Hayes were heading off on an international competitive shooting adventure, we quickly booked them on the podcast to get a sense of what they were excited for and how they planned to be ready for the Northern Ireland Shotgun Championship.

Aaron has been on the show a few times before, notably after shooting the IPSC Shotgun World Shoot in Italy in 2015. We welcome Aaron's bride Niki in her first appearance on The 3-Gun Show! Niki is in her second year of shooting 3-Gun (and actually shooting in general!) and we discuss how she approached preparing for the World Shoot as a newer shooter. You probably won't be surprised to find that Niki found the international shooting community incredibly welcoming.

Listen in as Niki and Aaron share the highs and lows of both their trip and of their match!

On This Podcast You'll Hear:

  • How to travel internationally with guns
  • The difference between IPSC Shotgun and American 3-Gun
  • How friendly (or unfriendly) is the International Shooting Community?
  • Plus! Why you should always listen to your husband...
  • And more!

Our buddy Dillen Easley recently posed this question in one of the 3-Gun Facebook groups: "Open discussion......... what rule (s) would you like to see changed in 3-gun?" and the thread exploded into well over 1000 comments. Most of it was constructive and there were some spirited disagreements. Adam Maxwell is on the show to discuss many of the rule changes proposed by members of the 3-Gun community. Some have great merit, some we shot down and Adam was even able to change my mind on a couple topics.

Proposed Rule Changes from the Community:

  • Shoot heads up. No divisions, no restrictions! All out drag race.
  • Thirty rounds in TacOps, leave the drums for open.
  • Bigger gap between limited and tacops- 8+1 max; 30 rounders max on rifle; no extended base plates for pistol mags.
  • I’m fine with 10+1 if that’s what everyone in tac ops shoots. But by God if ol’ Johnny boy is running a 14 rounder then I am too!
  • First thing we do is get rid of the whiney PCC shooters.
  • Plus! Dave and Adam's proposed rule changes.
  • And more!

Matt Martini and I sat down at the Lucas Oil Range after the PCC Championship to chat about the match, how USPSA treats Pistol Caliber Carbine and why their should be no "High Overall" winner at matches. Matt started shooting 3-Gun after he had achieved a Master Classification in USPSA Production and brings many of the mental performance and visualization concepts that are frequently discussed by pistol shooters to 3-Gun. We discuss the importance of shooting with an aggressive club, learning to shoot and load a shotgun and what the future holds for 3-Gun and PCC.

Key Points from the Podcast:

  • What is the big separator between new and experienced 3-Gunners?
  • How to practice with consistency, the first time
  • How to stay in front of the power curve
  • Plus! The steep PCC learning curve
  • And more!

Generation III Gun is an organization focused on promoting youth in the shooting sports. Each year Gen III gives out sponsorships to Juniors that shoot major 3-Gun matches and they also give free spots to Juniors for the Generation III Gun Championship in Osage, MO. This year Gen 3 added a new feature to their match in the form of a Junior shoot off. The format is really cool, the Junior Shooters get to pick two adult competitors for a team shoot off. Each team gets to shoot the array once to seed them into a bracket and the top teams shoot it off for glory.

This episode of the podcast features live play-by-play with many previous guests and this year's winners!

Join us for the Shoot-Off action at the JP Enterprises Jeff Kirkwold Memorial Match on this replay of the Grunt Style Live 3-Gun Show. This match has a unique format of five stages on day one that seed you into a bracket for the shoot off on day two. There is also a second chance bracket for those that go down early so the shooting doesn't stop just because of one bad performance. My co-host Ryan Muckenhirn of Vortex Optics and I had a lot of fun during the live show and were joined by John Paul of title sponsor JP Enterprises and Match Director Adam Maxwell.

Join us for the action, JP's practical shooting wisdom and to find out who wins!

Highlights of the Live Podcast:

  • The inspiration behind the JKM Match
  • Some insights and words of wisdom from Title Sponsor John Paul of JP Enterprises
  • The Winner of the 2017 Jeff Kirkwold Memorial Match

Adam Riser, Marketing Manager of AMTAC Suppressors, instructor at the Tactical Performance Center in St. George Utah and friend of the show makes a return visit to tell us the proper way to introduce new shooters to 3-Gun. If you're like me, once you got bitten by the 3Gun bug you became a fanatic. As fanatics we often get a bit over eager when bringing friends or acquaintances into our world and can easily overwhelm them or scare them away. Adam guides us through a simple process of introducing someone to the sport while making it enjoyable for both you and them. Plus! Adam tells us about the time he learned how serious dealing with the TSA can be...

Key Points From The Podcast:

  • The perils of traveling with firearms
  • Steps for introducing new shooters to the sport
  • The very basics of safety in on-boarding a friend into 3-Gun
  • Giving the shooter a sense of the match flow

This episode is by popular demand as in Episode 146 I mentioned this topic would be in the Patreon group and eventually on the main feed but many of you wanted to hear this particular episode right away so here we go. These questions are from Tim Ferriss’s new book Tools of Titans. Tim is an author, blogger, podcaster and the main focus & subtitle of his new book is sharing “the tactics, routines and habits of billionaires, icons and world-class performers.”

The questions that Adam and I tackle in this episode is from a chapter on “Deconstructing Sports and Skills with Questions.” Once I read this chapter I knew that these questions would be interesting and applicable to 3-Gun or practical shooting in general.

Some examples of deconstruction questions include:

Deconstructing Practical Shooting Questions:

  • Who is good at 3 Gun despite being poorly built for it? Who's good at this that shouldn't be?
  • Who are the most controversial or unorthodox athletes or trainers in Practical Shooting? Why? What do you think of them?
  • Who are the most impressive lesser-known teachers?
  • What makes you different? Who trained you or influenced you?
  • Have you trained others to do this? Have they replicated your results?
  • What are the biggest mistakes and myths you see in 3-Gun training? What are the biggest wastes of time?

A couple listener favorites, Corinne Mosher and Dillen Easley make a return to The 3-Gun Show Podcast to drop a bit of timely knowledge for all those new and experienced shooters out there. We are in the middle of the practical shooting season and competition is heating up which means that often emotions heat up as well. Of all the things that we need to learn to shoot matches, etiquette is one of the most important topics and somehow we keep teaching it last. Join us for a practical discussion on how to conduct yourself before, during and after the match.

Highlights of the Podcast:

  • Being a good squad mate is a learning process that takes time to get right
  • Why if you're not resetting, you are effectively cheating
  • Stay off the stage while other people (including RO's) are shooting
  • Your responsibility from shooter to just shot to back on the stage and resetting
  • How much time should you take to recover from a stage?
  • Why you should thank your Range Officers after each stage
  • Plus: How to show gratitude to the sponsors of a match
  • And More!

Brian Payne has come up in many conversations that I've had with 3-Gunners all across the country. He is a rifle builder at JP Enterprises, father to two amazing shooters in our sport and a heavy influence to many that have come up shooting competition in Minnesota. I was fortunate to meet Brian at the Nordic Vortex Tri-Gun and his kindness lived up to the legend. In this episode we dive into his start in 3-Gun in his 40's, how he practiced and taught his boys to shoot without a huge ammo budget and the importance of mentoring new people in the sport.

Be sure to listen to the beginning and listen to the first retraction I've recorded for the show. I totally got the story about the 2016 Rockcastle 3-Man 3-Gun wrong and I set the record straight.

Highlights of the Podcast:

  • Training 3 Payne's without little resources. Hint: It's dry fire...
  • How to separate the Super Squad to mentor new shooters
  • Why Brian was fearless to shoot major matches right from the start
  • A proud achievement of 3-Gun in Minnesota
  • Plus! The most fulfilling match that Brian has ever shot
  • And More!
