I’m excited to have Minnesota shooter Nathan Payne on the podcast. Nathan has a really unique perspective on the game, he came in late compared to the rest of his family and his father Bryan and younger brother Tyler had already made a significant impact on the sport. Nathan has done an incredible job of integrating training tactics and dedication that he learned in his days of playing college football into learning a new sport.

We talk about the pressure of living up to the family name, how his approach to gear and planning is much different than that of his 3-Gun BFF Jake Latola and what he is doing to improve and grow in the shooting sports. In the final third of the podcast we get into some great advice that Nathan received from a football coach and how he applies it to training: Preparation is Everything.

There is a lot to learn in this one so enjoy this interview with the great Nathan Payne!

As you heard in episode 184, I'm helping design and put on a Run & Gun match in Colorado this October. Several of our local shooters are prepping and trying to figure out how to carry all the gear they'll need for the match. Our buddy Bryan Ray reached out to help as he's done several Run and Gun's at Rockcastle Shooting Center and elsewhere in Kentucky.

Bryan has been on the show many times in the past so you as you know he’s quite an accomplished 3-Gunner in his own right but you may not know that he has won several Run & Gun races as well. He’s tried out many different gear solutions and has arrived on what he feels is the best setup for his game. Tune in to find out how to carry all your gear for your next Run & Gun.

Jeremy Gresham is back on the podcast and this time we get to do a deep dive on where he came from, what he thinks of 3-Gun from an industry executive position, why he chooses to sponsor matches & shooters and his ideas of things we can do to improve the shooting sports. Jeremy has a long career in the firearms industry is currently the Director of Sales & Marketing for IWI US which has brought you products like the Galil and Tavor rifles and the Jericho pistol.

We recorded this one after hours at Triggrcon 2018 which was a really fun industry/consumer show in Bellevue Washington. Since we recorded this interview IWI has stepped up as the title sponsor of this year’s Generation III Gun. This is a pretty cool development because I love Gen3 and Jeremy sees the importance of supporting youth in the shooting sports.

Jeremy has some strong opinions and expectations of people in the shooting sports. Listen along and let me know in the comments below if you agree or disagree with him and why.

Jason Tielke has been around the 3-Gun scene since the days where you could shoot every 3-Gun match in the country and still have time for other hobbies. Quite a lot has changed in the decade he has been traveling the country for multigun matches but one thing has remained constant- his commitment to his practice.

Jason and I have shot together quite a bit and I’ve always found his approach of practicing hard and using adequate gear until it is all used up to be quite refreshing. We got to talking at breakfast after the 2017 Generation 3 Gun and he told me a really cool story about his first Major IDPA match that he also tells in the show here.

If you’re into making the most out of what you have and still progressing in the sport, you’re going to love this interview with Jason Tielke.

Special Field Correspondent Adam Maxwell is back after a triumphant trip to Las Vegas and tells us all about what to expect from SFWMC and how you can prepare for next year's match. Rule Set Unitied Multigun League w/ Expedition Multigun Scoring
PractiScore? Yes with registration and score posting **With Score Log Updates**

*Other opportunities

  ...It's Vegas...

Match Flavor Execution- Learn the marks, hit the marks, make the shot...quickly
Terrain Rugged Bays- Everything is in bays, but the are not necessarily flat and have lots of ankle-roller rocks.
Skillz Utilized Cyclic-rate match- fast shooting, a USPSA match with 3 guns. Lots of pistol distance rifle shots- but a couple tricky ones. No shotgun heavy stages and no shotgun over 10 yards. Adequate use of slugs
Farthest Shot and/or # of long range targets 340 yards, approximately 7
Logistics Very efficient. Smooth registration. Regular scoring updates (almost real time). Smoothest prize table ever.
Venue Las Vegas- easiest access there is and best amenaties
Pre-Communication Yes, timely emails and the most comprehsive website to date.
Staff On the whole, not customer serivce or match flow oriented. Quick on the DQ trigger, gotcha mentality, disorganized/inefficient reset, and lacking staff to RO rapore.
Fun factor I really liked the cyclic rate shooting. The stages were fast and fun. Easy enough not to be stressful, but challenging enough to keep you honest. Would like to see more challenging shotgun shots on par with the challenges for pistol and rifle.
Funny things that happen at the match. Keith Garcia's liason activities

Rocky Mountain 3-Gun is one of those storied matches that has been around for a long time. Special Field Correspondent Nick Ingmire calls it "a rifleman's match" and in this episode of The 3-Gun Show's Match Recon you'll find out why. Combine challenging and sometimes tricky multigun stages with the gorgeous backdrop that is the NRA Whittington Center and you have the recipe for an epic match.

As you'll hear in the podcast I intended to make the 2018 match but wasn't able to get there. This turned out to be a tragedy because the 2018 was the last match for RM3G. So consider this episode a time-capsule of a great match that had an amazing run of 16 years.

July was a fantastic month for The 3-Gun Show and two of the highlights were attending the 2018 Triggrcon and getting the opportunity to meet and interview Adam Kraut. Adam first came on my radar when he ran for the NRA Board of Directors and after researching him to see if he deserved my vote I found that Adam is not only an attorney focusing on firearms but he is also a prolific content creator, heading up The Legal Brief on the popular YouTube channel The Gun Collective. After viewing several of his episodes I was hooked and was pleased to learn we share many of the same views on firearms topics.

As you'll hear in this interview Adam has an incredible skill for translating complex legal topics into language that the layperson can understand and does it in an entertaining and humorous manner. Since we recorded this interview Adam has decided to run for another bid at the NRA Board of Directors and I strongly encourage that you check out his website to learn more about him and his platform. If his style and views appeal to you, visit www.adamkraut.com to sign and mail (yes mail) a petition to nominate Adam for the 2019 NRA Board of Directors.

Craig Outzen returns for a fun podcast where we take on some of the most controversial topics that have been discussed in the 3-Gun Facebook Groups recently including the SERPA holster, half-day vs full-day match schedule, Pro Shooters as a myth and should match directors shoot their own match?

This show has sparked quite the spirited discussion on YouTube and Facebook so let us know what you think whether it’s on the blog at here or whichever social platform you prefer.

The Rockcastle 3-Gun Pro/Am is the biggest match in our sport when measured by attendance. With two matches going on at the same time, a professional and an amateur, over 500 shooters descend on the Rockcastle Shooting Center in Park City, Kentucky each year.

This year's match featured many of the scenarios that you've come to expect from shooting at Rockcastle such as long range targets, shooting on a golf course, the bathhouse and of course some jungle runs.

The Pro/Am has a reputation of being a party with a match attached to it. Did it live up to that expectation? Was the match worth shooting? Find out by listening in.

Plus! Adam and I have a long discussion on what is a "pro" in 3-Gun after recognizing some controversy based around heavily sponsored and experienced shooters that were shooting the amateur match.

In this week’s podcast I get to chat with Eric Eckhardt. Eric has spent years in his professional life, breaking down technique and finding efficiency in movement. We talk about the benefits and rewards of a long term grind toward achievement, how he was able to set aside his relationship with his fiancé Heather Miller to train her for the IPSC shotgun world shoot and then we dig into some hardcore nerd topics on physical training, mental training and of course firearms training.

Quote from a listener who watched the interview live:

"Think your long range game is spot on? Listen to this and you'll likely change your mind."

Ryan Reed has been in the game for nearly a decade now and he’s seen a lot of changes to matches, his game and his practice. We also discuss the old days, what the matches were like and what got him hooked in the first place.

I really enjoyed this chat with Ryan because several people come into the game, burn really hot and burn out fast. Ryan has a very well thought out method for choosing the matches he shoots that minimize time away from the family and maximize fun.

Dean DeTurk is our guest in this edition of the show and we had an incredible conversation about keeping shooting fun, enjoying the variety the shooting sports offer and who his early mentors were in the game.

Plus, I learned that Dean is a history teacher and we talk about his passion of helping young people progress in the shooting sports. And a topic we rarely get into on the 3-Gun Show but something that is very important to Dean and many, many of you – School Security.

Dean stresses the importance of sticking to your plan so plan to catch this episode of The 3-Gun Show.

Our coverage of the 2018 IPSC Shotgun World shoot continues this week with United States Ladies Open Team member Heather Miller. Heather switched divisions and trained hard to represent her country, fulfilling a promise that she made to herself after she wasn't able to attend the 2015 Shotgun World Shoot.

Before we get to the world shoot Heather tells us about her intro to practical shooting and how her first match in IDPA turned to USPSA before she found her home in 3-Gun. She credits the practical shooting world for giving her the confidence that she carries with her today.

The Nordic Vortex Tri-Gun is a storied match that was started by DPMS and through some political difficulties at their original range turned into a shotgun-only match. That carried on for a number of years and spread the shotgun culture throughout the practical shooters of Minnesota.

The Tri-Gun has been resurrected as a 3-Gun match at its new home of Forest Lake Sportsmen's Club.

Don't expect a lot of hoser targets or easy shots at this match, they put you to the test with pistol and, of course, shotgun. Find out more by listening to this Match Recon.

Match Flavor Very MN, shotgun targets were difficult, heavy and far away
Terrain 7 bay stages, 3 that were multiple bays, long range was just in a large bay. 2 natural terrain - jungle runny stages.
Skillz Utilized precision, not much hoser stuff, pistol targets were far, shotgun targets were far, uncomfortable positions, getting crammed inside small areas, shotgun loading, clay targets with rifle.
Farthest Shot and/or # of long range targets 1 375, 3 275, 3 175, then reengage 75 yards forward
Logistics Check in and get your t-shirt, looked pretty straightforward. Main match seemed well organized. RO Match was very disorganized.
Venue Rifle bays out to 400 yards, competition bays with 20 ft berms, 5 stand, sporting clays, trap & skeet, and 3D archery. SAND EVERYWHERE!
Pre-Communication Email came out 2 weeks in advance with rules, round count, self squadding info, squad matrix etc. These were later given to shooters in the form of a match booklet.
Staff One RO was a close rider. One of 3 organizers was a complete loose cannon.
Fun factor/Dave Factor Stages were pretty good other than the Terminator one. Hot Holster, Getting inside small pallets.
Funny things that happen at the match. I whooped Becky's booty on Stage 5, Diamond mine. RO match in the woods was completely different, a good reminder how difficult it is to place well as an RO.

This was the most difficult Match Recon that I've done to date. I had high hopes going into the Wyoming Magpul Governor's Match and was very disappointed in both the match and the match administrators, Competition Dynamics.

One of the biggest problems in 3-Gun is that everyone seems afraid to "tell it like it is" when something goes wrong. When a match is terrible or a product is bad people just seem to clam up and say nothing. I've heard stories of repercussions for speaking up- sponsorship can be pulled, you can get blackballed from certain matches or get a reputation as a troublemaker.

I owe it to you guys as listeners of The 3-Gun Show to tell you the truth so you can make good choices on where you spend your hard earned entertainment dollars.

I believe in the vision that the Wyoming Governor's office has for their match and it was a very cool experience to watch Governor Matt Mead speak before the prize table.

Please listen with an open mind and let me know what you think in the comments below.

Changing divisions has been a hot topic lately with the dissolution of the 3-Gun Nation Pro Series we have seen a lot of the folks that traditionally shoot Tac-Ops (the only division recognized in the Pro Series) switching to Limited, Open and even Heavy divisions.

Why the exodus? There are many reasons to swap divisions; trophy hunting, shooting with friends, diversifying a team or even just playing with some new toys. Whatever your reason you can rest assured that the 3-Gun Show will help you through the process including helping you break down the rule set to maximize your advantage, choosing proper equipment and even giving you permission to purchase that brand new blaster.

This and more as we break down that what, why and how of division jumping.

This week is the final installment of Parting Shots from the Vortex Shooter’s Source 3-Gun Championship and we get to hear a couple tales of alarms going off while people are shooting, why you never fall asleep at a match, the hazards of shooting big-bore and what is “pork chopping.”

Plus we get into the VS3G match, what sets Texas matches apart from the rest of the country and the strategy of shooting a match with a mulligan. If you like this type of format or even if you don’t like it, be sure to let me know what you think in the comments and enjoy these tales from the range with Nick Miller, Ryan Reed, Bill Corcoran and Adam Maxwell.

There are always those cool stories from the range that we hear and I thought it would be fun to record a bunch of them to share with the audience. This one was recorded right after I fired my last shot at Vortex Shooter’s Source 3-Gun Championship. Adam Maxwell is going to tell us an incredible tale of exceptional sportsmanship from Scott Greene that took place at the Lucas Oil Shotgun Championship finale.

Mike and Lan of Dissident Arms have two big announcements to share with the 3-Gun Show audience plus how they're planning a big splash on the international competitive shotgun scene.

We also discuss all things shotgun including stage design, specifically how to make a jungle run that flows, their partnership with Briley Manufacturing and coming full circle from buying their supply of shotguns at an online retailer to having their KL-12 sold at that retailer.

Thank you to Mike and Lan for being great guests on The 3-Gun Show!

May 9, 2018

After shooting for six years you come up with your first DQ in a major match while you're in the middle of the performance of a lifetime. How do you deal with that impact to your mental game and to your future performance? This exact situation just happened to Dillen Easley and we got together after the Gadsden Shotgun Championship in Missouri to do a post mortem on the event.

We also get into planning a comeback from your first DQ and how to reframe the event to ensure future performance. Along the way we get into technical breakdown of stages, how to train to be ready for the shooting season when the temperature drops, and working your stage plans toward your strengths. Plus, the ever present conversation of mental game.
